Halloween at Calypso!

Halloween is tomorrow and you can bring your kiddos to Calypso to trick or treat!  We will be open our usual hours (8:15 AM-5:30 PM; closed for lunch from 1-2PM) and have dye and preservative free lollipops, sweetened with either organic cane sugar or birch xylitol.  For parents who would like to avoid candy all together, we have new fun stickers for your children to enjoy!

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is classified as a sugar alcohol because it chemically resembles both sugar and alcohol.  It comes from fruits, vegetables and other plants and because of its sweetness and health promoting qualities it is used and marketed as an alternative to sugar.

Is Xylitol Good For You?

Xylitol is often a better choice than sugar because:

  • it prevents dental decay by increasing salivation and combating S. Mutans, the bacteria that causes cavities
  • it is poorly absorbed, and thus does not contribute to the same blood sugar spikes as sugar
  • it combats S. pneumoniae – an organism responsible for ear infections and sinusitis.  (Chewing xylitol gum at the first sign of one of these infections can ward them off before they start)

The Take Home:  you will be bombarded with candy tomorrow; come to Calypso and show off your kiddos in their costumes and pick up some healthy sweet treats!
