Calendula Told Me to Bring plants to the people

Introducing Intuitive Plant Healings 🌿

There are moments in life when everything seems to circle back to where you began.

My life has been unusual—and at times downright surreal.

I’ve lived on the beaches of Maui. I’ve had transcendent experiences that challenged what I thought I understood about consciousness, intuition and healing. I’ve experienced telepathy and profound connection that I still can’t fully explain.

And I’ve had experiences with my own body that have brought me face-to-face with how fragile—and astonishing—life can be.

An eye surgery went terribly wrong, and I lost sight in one eye for a week before, incredibly, my vision was saved.

I went into major heart surgery believing we were preventing an aortic aneurysm, only to discover that my aorta had already dissected and my body had somehow kept me alive.

I am so bloody lucky.

And incredibly grateful.

Experiences like these change the questions you ask about your life.

For me, one of those questions has become:

How can I use everything I’ve learned and experienced to be of greater service?

And strangely—or perhaps not strangely at all—the answer keeps bringing me back to where this journey began.

The plants.

“Calendula told me to come.”

At the beginning of naturopathic medical school, my class sat around a table and everyone was asked to tell the group why they had come to naturopathic medicine.

One by one, people shared their stories.

Some came from families with generations of physicians. Others talked about their academic paths or what they wanted to accomplish in medicine.

Then it got to me.

I had one sentence:

“Calendula told me to come.”

Everyone laughed.

I wasn’t kidding.

Long before becoming a naturopathic physician, I was an herbalist. Plants had already become teachers, medicines and companions in my life.

Looking back after more than 25 years working with herbal medicine, I think I understand Calendula’s message differently now.

She wasn’t simply telling me to go to medical school.

She was telling me:

Connect people to plants.

Somewhere Between Science and Intuition

My naturopathic medical education taught me physiology, pathology, biochemistry, pharmacology, diagnosis and clinical reasoning.

My herbal training taught me another language.

Plants contain extraordinarily complex chemistry. They contain alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, tannins, polysaccharides, volatile oils and thousands of other constituents capable of interacting with human physiology.

But traditional herbalism has never been only about isolated constituents.

It is also about the whole plant, the whole person and the relationship between them.

And throughout my career, I’ve repeatedly encountered something I find fascinating.

Sometimes someone has used an herb many times without much happening.

Then I formulate several plants together for that particular person, at that particular moment—and their experience is completely different.

That doesn’t mean I’ve discovered some magical formula or that herbs cure every condition.

It has simply kept me curious.

What happens when instead of asking only, “What herb is used for this diagnosis?” we also ask, “What plant belongs with this person right now?”

That question sits at the heart of Intuitive Plant Healings.

What Is Intuitive Plant Healing?

This work doesn’t ask me to abandon science.

It allows me to use more of what I know.

I bring together my traditional naturopathic clinical training, more than two decades of herbal experience, knowledge of physiology and botanical medicine, and the intuitive relationship with plants that existed long before I became a physician.

And then we look at you as a whole person.

Not simply:

What symptom do you have?

But:

What is happening physically?

What is happening emotionally?

Where does your nervous system seem stuck?

What patterns keep repeating?

What is asking for attention?

And, for those who want to explore this dimension:

Where might your spirit need support?

Then I sit with your story.

And I sit with the plants.

What a Session Looks Like

We begin with a 30-minute virtual intake. <-click to book.

You’ll tell me what’s happening, what you’re experiencing, what you’ve already tried and what you’re hoping to support.

I listen clinically.

I listen as an herbalist.

And I listen intuitively.

After our intake, I spend time separately reviewing what you’ve shared and sitting with the plants to determine what botanical support feels most appropriate.

Then I come back to you with your recommendations and individualized directions for use.

Your plant medicine might take the form of a:

  • Custom tincture
  • Herbal tea
  • Flower essence
  • Topical preparation or salve
  • Herbal bath or other external application
  • Plant practice, including simply sitting, breathing or practicing plant gazing with a particular botanical ally

Sometimes medicine isn’t simply something we swallow.

Sometimes the invitation is to develop a relationship.

Plants as a Bridge

This may be the part of my work that’s hardest to explain intellectually.

I’ve experienced times when I couldn’t physically access a plant medicine, yet sitting quietly and calling that familiar plant to mind brought an unmistakable sense of its presence.

How should we explain that?

Spiritual?

Energetic?

Neurological?

The interaction between memory, expectation and the nervous system?

Something we simply don’t understand yet?

I don’t feel compelled to force an answer.

I can respect what science can demonstrate while remaining curious about experiences it hasn’t adequately explained.

That intersection has fascinated me for much of my life.

Plants seem to form a bridge between the tangible and intangible worlds of healing.

Their roots literally enter the earth.

Their leaves reach toward light.

Their flowers call us through color, scent and beauty.

Their seeds carry everything required to begin again.

And perhaps our relationship with them reminds us that we aren’t separate from nature in the first place.

We are nature.

Returning to the Mother

One theme has followed me repeatedly through my work: returning to the Mother.

To earth.

To simplicity.

To relationship.

To remembering that healing isn’t always about adding another supplement, another test or another complicated protocol.

Sometimes we need sophisticated medicine.

And sometimes we need to return to something ancient.

A cup of tea.

A flower.

A root.

A bath.

A garden.

Our breath.

Our bodies.

The earth beneath our feet.

Modern medicine and traditional healing don’t have to be enemies.

There is room for rigorous clinical thinking and reverence.

There is room for physiology and intuition.

There is room for laboratories and gardens.

That’s the space where I want Intuitive Plant Healings to live.

Come Meet the Plants With Me 🌿

For years, this has been a quieter part of my work—something I’ve shared with friends, family and select patients who were open to letting intuition join us at the table.

I’m ready to open that table a little wider.

If you’re curious but aren’t sure whether this kind of work is for you, I offer a complimentary 10-minute virtual inquiry session.

Come meet me.

Ask questions.

Tell me what you’re looking for.

We’ll see whether this work feels like a fit.

If you’d like to continue, we’ll schedule your 20-minute Intuitive Plant Healing intake, and from there I’ll sit with your story and the plants and create your individualized recommendations.

All Intuitive Plant Healing consultations are currently offered virtually.

After more than 25 years, I finally feel as though I’ve come full circle.

Maybe Calendula knew exactly what she was doing all along. 🌼
