Often what drives patients to our office is the desire to lose weight. Numerous people have complained that although they have tried “everything”, nothing works. Furthermore, they report that they have had their thyroid function tested and that their labs were normal.
Thyroid Lab Testing
After many years of practicing medicine Dr. Amanda and I know to continue questioning. Instead of taking for granted that a patient’s prior labs were normal, we request to see that the labs were recent (performed within the past month), and we request a copy of the results. As naturopathic doctors we are trained to evaluate lab results using functional lab ranges. For example, while the normal range for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is 0.00 to 5.00, when considering optimal thyroid functioning a better range might be 1.00 to 3.00.
Also, while many doctors are trained only to test for TSH, we test for additional indicators of thyroid function, such as the thyroid hormones T4 and T3, and two thyroid antibodies. Hashimoto’s Disease, an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks the thyroid, is now quite common – but it can only be detected by testing for thyroid antibodies.
If your thyroid is not working properly, you will not be able to lose weight. You might also experience hair loss, fatigue, dry skin, or constipation. If you have any of these symptoms, call Calypso today at 503 472-5500 for an evaluation. You are worth it.
